The extra virgin olive oil PDO Sitia ADELΦOS, produced by the Agricultural Cooperative of Zakros, is distinguished this year also, in the Athena IOOC.
This year's International Olive Oil Competition ATHENA IOOC, was held in Kavala, May 4, 5 and 6, 2023. The competition attracted producers from 24 countries of the world, ranging from Peru and the United States of America, to Saudi Arabia, South Africa and China.
A few words about Kavala
The region of Kavala, which belongs to the region of Eastern Macedonia and Thrace, is included in the Historic olive groves of Greece, with an ancient olive growing tradition for which there are testimonies from the time of Homer and findings of a complete olive press from 1st century AD that demonstrate its historical continuity. After a shift of crops to grain and tobacco, due to historical and economic circumstances, the new products also experienced a great boom and gave the region a boost of development, turning it into an international economic center during the 18th and 19th centuries. The last 15 years, Kavala's olive production is recovering, completing the Agricultural identity of the land.
